A Gardner wants to use a computer to monitor growing conditions in his green house.
(a) Name three sensors that he will need. (3 marks)
1. Moisture sensor
2. Light sensor
3. Temperature sensor
(b) Explain why computers are unable to read data directly from these sensors. (2 marks)
They are unable to read data directly from sensors because computers can only understand digital whereas sensors see data in analogue.
(c) What device is needed to enable the computer to read the data? (1 mark)
Analogue to digital converter.
(d) Give two advantages of using a computer to monitor the conditions rather than having it done by humans. (2 marks)
1. Computers can perform more precise and accurate measurements than humans can.
2. Computers can also perform faster readings from sensors than humans.
A house has a burglar alarm system. Describe the inputs, outputs and processing involved in such a system. (6 marks)
In a burglar alarm there would be a motion sensor to detect motion, the output of this would be a buzzer. the process involved would be 'if a motion is detected, turn buzzer on, if no sound is detected do nothing'. Also in a burglar alarm there would be a sound sensor to detect sound, the output of this maybe an alarm sounding. the process involved with this is 'if a sound is detected, turn on the alarm, if a sound isn't detected do nothing'.
