CPU runs software by completing the list of instructions (software), they travel back and forth through memory because this is a lot faster than it having to travel from the CPU straight to the storage!
The difference between Storage and memory:
Storage-This is simply the amount of space you have to store your data and is very slow at getting data out and into a computer system
Memory- This is very fast but is volatile so will go if your turn your computer off.
So when you use an application it is saved in storage and is then copied to memory when its opened, when you close it only the updates and new things on the application are copped back to storage.
